The tunnel is the most crucial infrastructure investment for our region's future growth and sustainability. Freight movement through our region is projected to increase 70 percent or more in the next 20 years. The Cross Harbor Rail Freight Tunnel would provide a Hudson River crossing to connect active freight railroads in New Jersey to those in Brooklyn. Such a connection would enable freight to travel to east-of-Hudson destinations by rail, rather than by truck. The choice is ours to make today: highway gridlock or investments that enable us to move trucks off the road and move our economy forward for growth.
Move NY&NJ was initiated to promote the region's interests in Washington as Congress considered reauthorization of the major federal transportation spending bill in 2003. In the long-awaited federal transportation bill of 2005 (Safe, Accountable, Flexible, and Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users or SAFETEA-LU), the Cross Harbor Rail Freight Tunnel project received a historic $100 million in a new designation as a Project of National and Regional Significance, which represents a significant victory for the tunnel and for freight rail in the region. In addition to the substantial funding, this special designation recognizes the essential need to support freight mobility and ensures that the project will not compete for funding with other transportation projects in the area.
The project's sponsor, the Port Authority of NY&NJ, is working to complete a supplemental draft environmental impact study for the project. The entire New York Congressional Delegation have been tireless advocates for the region to receive its fair share of federal transportation dollars, including funding for the Cross Harbor Rail Freight Tunnel, and Move NY&NJ is working to support efforts to include funding of the project in the next federal bill.
